Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” is quite probably one of the most frequently played piano sonatas. Its name – not given by Beethoven – derives from the mysterious first movement in C sharp minor. It is said that amateurs find this first movement relatively easy to play but the presto last movement extremely difficult; but for professionals it is the other way around. Beethoven’s manuscript, the valuable basis for our Urtext edition no longer survives in its entirety; it is today in the collection of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn.
